Helicopter or Eagle Leader?
Dequity Partners Dequity Blog
Last week I had a great discussion with a group of business owners about the best skill or attitude a business owner or leader should have.
We had the usual comments like “honesty”, “integrity”, “empathy” and “strength”. We also generally agreed that the leader or owner needed to adopt a “helicopter view” and not get bogged down in the day-to-day things.
However, during these discussions I tend to look for the signals from the group that are below the radar, are unusual or interesting and one comment stood out for me which was:
“I’d rather be an Eagle than a Helicopter”.
For me it was perfect and far easier to understand. Often we use the term “helicopter view” to suggest we are looking down and able to see the “bigger picture” but I like the idea of the eagle more.
The eagle soars high and has incredible eyesight, when it spots something, it swoops down with tremendous speed. Isn’t that what a good leader does on business opportunities or problems? The best leaders I have worked with are able to swap from high level to detail in an instant. Very few don’t take the time to understand every aspect of their business and know it as well as anyone.
It’s true that you can’t be an expert in everything but the best leaders and successful business owners know how everything and everyone fits together.
So thanks to Sam for this insight. I hope you don’t mind me sharing your wisdom.
